AESC has launched its new UK electric vehicle battery gigafactory in Sunderland.
Production is now officially underway at AESC’s new 15.8 GWh plant that will manufacture lithium-Ion batteries for electric vehicles made in the UK and support the launch of the new Nissan LEAF.
It is the culmination of over a decade’s experience building British made EV batteries for the UK car industry.
At the heart of AESC’s operation will be the largest clean room in the UK, where the company’s cutting-edge battery cells are manufactured to the highest quality standards. Conditions in the clean room are equivalent standard to a hospital operating room.
AESC’s UK workforce will rise to around 1,000 once the plant is fully operational - a fourfold increase since AESC established its current operation at the Sunderland site in 2019, with the company investing over a billion pounds in the UK during that time.
AESC UK Plant Director Jim Marley said: “The launch of our new UK electric vehicle battery gigafactory represents a significant leap in battery technology. It will power the new Nissan LEAF and drive the electrification of the British car industry to a new level. Our original gigafactory was the first in Europe and the Plant 2 will anchor a resilient, globally competitive EV supply chain for the UK. ”

Earlier this year AESC helped launch the National Battery Academy at New College Durham and Newcastle University that will help drive up skills and train the new EV battery manufacturing workforce in the region.
